Fluoroscopy /Barium Studies
Wrist X-ray
Barium Enema
Fluoroscopy is the use of real-time x-rays (similar to video) for diagnostic tests including barium studies. Barium is a dense liquid that can be used to outline different parts of the gastro-intestinal tract (the gut). It is used for barium swallows (for the gullet/oesophagus), barium meals (stomach and duodenum), small bowel follow-throughs (small intestine) and barium enemas (colon/large bowel).

These tests are performed by Berkshire Imaging Consultant Radiologists at the Dunedin and Berkshire Independent Hospitals.

The tests vary and the X-ray Department of the above hospitals will inform you, usually by letter, of the specific preparation and what to expect afterwards.
